What to Expect at Your First Stripe Test – BJJ Beginner’s Guide

This page outlines the fundamental movements and techniques required for White Belt stripe testing at Legacy BJJ Omaha. We share our guide to help students better understand the core beginner competencies for BJJ.

Stripe Testing Overview

Phase 1: The Warm-Up & Seminar Before the test begins, we often host a seminar. This keeps the energy high and allows those not testing to continue their technical development.

Phase 2: The Mental Prep (Q&A) We provide a 10-minute Q&A block specifically for testers. This is the time to clarify hand placement for that Guillotine or the exact hip movement for a sweep. Use this time to settle your nerves!

Phase 3: The Technical Evaluation As a premier academy for BJJ in Omaha and Papillion, our testing standards ensure that every student earns their rank through a proven, technical curriculum. You will be evaluated as either “Pass” or “Fail” on specific movements.

Phase 4: Awarded Stripes for those who test; they are awarded a stripe at the front of the class. Students who did not pass are given feedback and specifics on what they need to do to earn their stripe.

Testing for your first stripe ensures you have a fundamental “survival” toolkit. These are subject to change as the program will evolve. Testing is not a competition; it is a demonstration of your understanding of leverage and body mechanics under controlled conditions.

Below is an evaluation based on a Pass/Fail basis across the following core positions:

1. The Mount

Demonstrating control and the ability to escape from the most dominant position in grappling.

  • Defense (Bottom): Execute a clean Upa escape and a technical Elbow escape.
  • Offense (Top): Demonstrate two variations of the Straight Arm Lock and a Front Choke from the top position.

2. The Guard

The heart of Jiu-Jitsu. You must show you can both attack and recover from the bottom.

  • Defense (Bottom): Successfully execute two different sweeps to transition from bottom to top.
  • Offense (Bottom): Show technical proficiency in the Triangle Choke, a standard Choke from bottom, and both the Straight and Bent Arm Locks.
  • Offense (Bottom): Demonstrate the Guillotine choke from the bottom position.
  • Counter-Offense: Show a proper Guillotine choke from the top position.

3. Passing the Guard

Getting past an opponent’s legs is critical for progression.

  • Passing: Demonstrate two technical guard passes, including at least one standing pass.

4. Cross Side (Side Control)

  • Defense (Bottom): Demonstrate a technical Guard Recovery and the ability to Turn to Knees safely to escape side control.
  • Offense (Top): Show two ways to transition to Mount and execute two variations of Arm Locks from the top cross-side position.

5. The Back

  • Offense: Demonstrate a Choke with and without the collar (Rear Naked Choke variations).
  • Defense: Successfully execute an Escape back to the floor when an opponent has secured your back.

Instructor Feedback & Key Focus Areas

If a technique isn’t quite there yet, we document it. Common areas for refinement include hand placement on top-position chokes or the transition from Knee Mount to Mount.
