Professor Matt Davis – Judo Instructor
Professor Matt Davis has been immersed in the art of Judo since 2000, bringing over
two decades of experience as both a dedicated practitioner and accomplished
competitor. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, he competed extensively in state and
regional tournaments, honing a strong technical foundation. Professor Davis recently
earned his Shodan (1st-degree black belt) under the International Judo Federation (IJF)
Coach Grace Talusan of Kokushi Midwest Judo and has completed his USA Judo
coaching certification.
In addition to his Judo expertise, Professor Davis holds a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
under Professor Marcos Barros with Gracie Barra. A former collegiate athlete and high
school football coach in suburban Chicago, he brings extensive coaching experience
and athletic insight to every class. His 26-year career in law enforcement across Illinois
and Iowa further enriches his approach, emphasizing discipline, leadership, and
practical application of martial arts principles.
At Legacy BJJ, Professor Davis is dedicated to guiding students of all levels in their
Judo journey—promoting technical mastery, mental resilience, and respect for the art.
