The Simple Guide to Tying Your BJJ Belt: Respect, Function, and Form
Learn the tricks and tips for tying your BJJ Belt, whether you’re a beginner or an expert. This shows you a quick knot example.
In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, your belt is more than a tool to keep your jacket closed; it’s a symbol of your journey, your time on the mats, and the respect you hold for the art.
Master the BJJ belt knot with this simple guide from Senior Professor Ed Shobe of Legacy BJJ Omaha. Learn the step-by-step method to tie your belt for maximum respect, security, and comfort on the mats. Perfect for beginners!
Tying your belt correctly serves three main purposes:
- Respect: Arriving on the mats with a tidy uniform shows respect to your instructors and training partners.
- Functionality: A secure belt keeps your Gi jacket in place, preventing it from riding up or becoming a strangulation hazard during rolls.
- The “Goldilocks” Fit: Your belt must be tight enough to stay secure during a heavy scramble, but loose enough to allow your hips and diaphragm to move freely.

Tutorial: The Simple Method (Step-by-Step) Tying Your BJJ Belt
Phase 1: The Set-Up

- Find the Center: Fold your belt in half so the ends touch. Follow the belt down to the middle to find the “crease” or center point.
- Left Over Right: Ensure your Gi top is folded correctly—the left side of the jacket should always be over the right side.
- Find Your Center: Place that center crease of the belt directly over your belly button.
Phase 2: The Wrap

- The Overlap: Wrap the belt around your waist. As you bring it back to the front, align the layers directly on top of each other.Pro Tip: When done correctly, the belt should look like a single strap around your waist from the back, not two separate lines.
- Check for Balance: Pull the ends out to the sides to ensure they are even in length.
Phase 3: The Knot

- The Over-Under: Cross the ends in front. Take the top strap and tuck it underneath both layers of the belt against your stomach.
- The First Cinch: Pull both ends to tighten. Make sure there is no loose gap between the belt and your Gi.
- The Final Knot: Take the strap that is now on top and cross it over the bottom strap. Reach through the loop you’ve created and pull it through.
- The Finish: Give it a sharp tug horizontally. Your knot should look like a “fortune cookie” shape.

Common Mistakes to Avoid Tying BJJ Belt
- The “Hula Hoop”: If your belt is too loose, your Gi will slide out within the first 30 seconds of drilling.
- The Uneven Ends: In many traditional gyms, having one end significantly longer than the other is seen as a lack of attention to detail.
- The Upside Down Rank: If your belt has a black “rank bar,” it is traditional (though not universal) to have it on a specific side based on your professor’s preference—usually the left.
